Wong Kai Hui

Hello! I am a journalist with six years of experience in digital media, non-profit organisations and research. Born and raised in Malaysia, I am currently based in Taiwan, pursuing my Master's degree in Inter-Asian Cultural Studies at National Tsing Hua University.

I was the Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award 2021 winner, and I was formerly a journalist for Malaysian independent media Malaysiakini, where I covered domestic politics, and wrote about sex/gender, environment, land, and youth labour.

I continue to write as an independent journalist and columnist. My works can be seen on various media platforms, including Taiwan's UDN Global, Linking Vision, Malaysia's Malaysiakini, and Australia's Missing Perspectives.

I am currently also the commissioning editor of This Is Southeast Asia, an emerging platform of literary writing, where I work with young Chinese writers from Singapore and Malaysia.

“Kai Hui is one of the many young journalists I have the privilege to work with in Malaysiakini. She is tenacious, meticulous, and diligent in pursuing her stories – all prerequisite skills for a budding investigative journalist.”

“What I find even more remarkable - like a number of journalists in Malaysiakini - she took it upon herself to not only write her stories in Chinese, which is her strongest language, but also translate them into English and Bahasa Malaysia.”
